
The day will begin with class work, learning about some of society’s most pressing challenges, followed by engagement in the community where students will have the opportunity to create an impact addressing these same issues. The Bonner Foundation is a nationally renowned organization fostering community service on college campuses. Students learn and serve with college students from the Bonner Program, one of the best domestic peace corps programs in the country. The College and Career Readiness Institute offers a one-week residential, non-credit college readiness and community service program which ultimately gives them a head start. The College of New Jersey’s Summer Service Scholars Pre-College Program gives students a taste of college life and the option of earning 4 college credits, over a two-week residential experience.

The College of New Jersey is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and has been recognized as an exemplar in public higher education (see ). The College is approximately 5 miles from Trenton, the state capital, 10 miles from Princeton, and one hour from both Philadelphia and New York. TCNJ’s beautiful campus occupies 289 landscaped acres in suburban Ewing, New Jersey.

Our programs focus on learning through community service, college readiness, career exploration, community-engaged learning, academic and experiential research with TCNJ faculty. The Pre-College Transition Program has been used as a model by other states and organizations for over 15 years as a means to enable students to achieve a better understanding of their own potential and gain self-confidence, while learning and experiencing first-hand many of the situations they will eventually have as college students.The College of New Jersey offers Pre-College Programs for high school students. Some of the offerings are credit-bearing while other are non-credit. These reports are shared with the transition counselor and the education counselor and are used in identifying strengths and weaknesses that can be addressed during the upcoming school year. Upon completion of the program, each instructor writes a report on each of the students that they have worked with during the program. Weekend activities are planned, as well, for those students who elect to stay on campus over the weekend.

They attend classes in various buildings, live in the dormitory, take meals in the student’s dining center, and are encouraged to make full use of the college’s facilities under controlled and supervised conditions within the confines of the campus.

The students experience life on campus and are fully integrated into the Drew community. Participation in the program provides the students with actual academic, social, and personal reality confrontation. CBVI has worked in partnership with Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, where the program has been conducted each summer, since the program was established in 1973. This unique vocational planning program was specifically designed to prepare students to undergo the transition from high school. These students are blind, severely visually impaired, multiple disabled and are considering attending college. The program is able to accommodate 25 – 35 students. The Pre-College Transition Program is a four - week development and assessment experience for students in high school grades 10 – 12.
